What to Look For In A Makeup Brush –– 5 Things You Should Know About

Makeup brushes are one of the most important tools in a woman’s makeup kit. A good makeup brush can make all the difference between a flawless, natural look and an overdone, cakey mess.

There are many different types of makeup brushes and they all serve different purposes. Brushes come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit your needs and preferences. Some people like to use large brushes, while others prefer smaller ones. Brushes can be made from synthetic or natural materials.

How your makeup turns out depends a lot on the tools you use to put it on. Even so, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good brush. With so many different types of makeup brushes on the market, it can be difficult to know which one is best for your needs. There are a few key factors to consider when picking a brush.

So, how do we know a good quality makeup brush?

What to look for in a makeup brush?

Natural or Synthetic

The bristles of a cosmetics brush can vary greatly in quality. Brushes can be either synthetic or created from natural bristles. But, how do we differentiate the two of them?

Natural and synthetic makeup brushes differ in terms of the material used to create the bonded fibers of the brush head.

Animal furs and hairs used to make natural bristles are recognized for being extremely soft, making them ideal for blending purposes. These animal hair includes goat hair, sable hair, pony hair, squirrel hair and the likes.

On the other hand, synthetic brushes are made from chemical fibers such as nylon or polyester. They tend to have the impression of having a rougher texture compared to natural bristles.  Good to know, the feel of synthetic brushes, which are often manufactured from nylon or other vegan materials, has improved greatly in recent years.

Head Shape

Every makeup brush is different. Their head shapes and sizes talk a lot about their function and how they should be used. For instance, a small eyeshadow brush could not be used as an alternative if you are lacking a foundation brush. Just its size would not fit in blending your whole face.

Handle Quality

In different brushes, the handles are also all different but one thing you should note about is having a good grip is important. Some people prefer brushes with longer handles for applying eye makeup, since they offer control and precision. Short handle brushes could be used on the liquid or creamy texture for an easy all-end coverage.

Bristle Quality

The bristles must be soft enough to not damage your skin but tough enough to pick up the product well. The bristles should be dense and flexible, not too stiff or too soft. The bristles should not shed when applying product or during use.

Durability

No one wants to waste their money on something that would easily be damaged, right? That is why you should pick a brush that would be sturdy enough for infinite use.

How do you care for your makeup brush?

A brush’s durability also would take into account how the owner is taking care of it. Responsibly cleaning the brush and using it properly would not just extend the life of your brush but also make your face cleaner and free from unwanted bacteria.

In cleaning, just use a mild liquid soap to clean the bristles, rinse them well, lay them flat on a dry towel in a horizontal direction, and let them air dry. It’s important to remember that you should never put the handles underwater to avoid rusting. Over time, this will hurt the bristles and often cause them to fall out.

How often do you clean your makeup brush?

If you put on makeup every day, you should clean your brushes once a week. But if you do not use it that often, just put it in a safe, clean place and you could clean it every month.
